The development of our swim diaper

Their development was probably one of the biggest challenges since the foundation of the WindelManufaktur. More than a year ago we worked on our swimming trunks for babies and toddlers. And here it is now! :)

Developing a really good product that stands out from other swim nappies and satisfies our high design standards was not so easy! But we do know that things can get still a bit better. Unlike other models, our swim diaper really does NOT want to get something into the water, which is thicker than the water itself. ;)

As with all our product developments, we have included our fan base to test sizes, fit and function. And as always, we were overwhelmed by the many feedback we received during our calls for testing. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again!

First test round of prototype 1 in April 2017:

Here the leg cuffs were still very loose, the snaps at the side were unlucky and that the microfleece inlay on the butt looks like this, we found also unattractive.

→ The detailed report about the development of our swim diaper cen be found in the blog (only in German).

The result

After several test runs, changes of cut and improvements OUR swim diaper has been created:

  •     in four different sizes,
  •     very fast drying,
  •     with really tight leg cuffs,
  •     an elastic waistband that makes it easy to put on and take off, never pinches or leaves marks,
  •     feels comfortable - without annoying snaps, velcro, cord or zippers.

The last point was especially important to us, because something can get caught under and on the water. This would not only cause damage to the fabric, but can also be dangerous for the child!

This is the current version of our swimming diaper. Subject to change without notice! ;)

The following size chart shows the size your child needs. To be absolutely sure, you can also measure the waist circumference (1) and leg circumference (2) with a tape measure.

The special feature is inside the swim diaper

It is very unlikely that babies and toddlers will urinate in the water or have bowel movements. Because the water pressure holds back pee-pee and poop. If a small mishap should happen, we have sewn in a net, which catches the milk stool and solid heaps reliably. Underneath we have sewn Microfleece in the back, which reinforces the leak protection.

Front Side
Back Side

In general, swim diapers are only used to catch bowel movements.

Some swim diapers have a suction core to absorb a little pee on the way into the water.

We have deliberately decided against the use of terry cloth and PUL, because terry cloth is soaked up and PUL keeps the water inside the diaper, making the diaper very heavy and slipping from the bottom.

In addition, the moisture penetrates into the swimsuits at any point. ;)

Material composition

  •  The outer fabric consists of 80% polyamide and 20% elastane.
  •  The net is made of 95% polyester and 5% spandex.
  •  The microfleece underneath is made of 100% polyester.

When purchasing, we pay close attention to the origin and production of the raw materials. We deliberately source our raw materials from democratic countries with fair working and production conditions. All fabrics are produced in compliance with Oeko-Tex guidelines. This means that our substances do not contain any chemicals that are dangerous to the skin.

With our swim diapers you also protect the environment by allowing your child to use the bathing diaper again and again and pass it on to siblings. This not only reduces waste, but also saves you a lot of money.

Swim Diapers made from regenerated fishing nets and other nylon waste from the ocean

Our swim diapers are made using Vita fabric by Carvico, an Italian fabric made with ECONYL® regenerated nylon. This fiber is made by recovering waste such as fishing-nets from the oceans and aquacultre industry, fabric scraps from mills or old carpets destined for landfills.

As well as being a solution on waste, ECONYL®, regenerated nylon is also better when it comes to climate change. It reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 80% compared with the material from oil.

The special feature of this yarn: its outstanding quality! It is twice as resistant to chlorine, sun creams and oils than other yarns and, in addition, the fabrics have a UV protection factor of 50+. Therefore our swim diapers are perfect for a baby swimming class in a pool or on a sunny beach.

Save the oceans with WindelManufaktur!
When you buy a swim diaper of the WindelManufaktur made with ECONYL®, you help reduce the plastic waste in the oceans because we are supporting the charitable initiative „Healthy Seas, a Journey from Waste to Wear“, which collects the so-called "ghost nets" and other plastic waste from the seas before they become a deadly threat to turtles, dolphins and others animals.

Care instructions

  •     30°C soft washing
  •     do not iron
  •     not suitable for tumble dryer

For the way home after bathing we recommend to store the well wrung out swim diaper in one of our medium sized wetbags.

Our models are available in different colours. We have deliberately chosen super simple and classic designs. Retro is in fashion again! :)

General information and tips for putting on and taking off the swim diapers

  • All swim diapers, whether they are for throwing away or made of fabric, DO NOT hold back urine! They are therefore not suitable for playing in the sandbox if your child is not yet dry, and should only be put on when it's time to go into the water
  • Diapers for swimming are only there to hold back the larger business. If you have a liquid chair, you should get out of the pool quickly and go straight to the next shower.
  • Fortunately, the poop will become thicker at some point. This remains in the diaper and does not get into the water.

How can I take off the filled swim diaper?

  • Best in the shower! There it can be rinsed out directly
  • If the stool is solid and your child can stand, you can of course take it off in the toilet, dispose it into the toilet and rinse the bathing trunks in the sink.
