The inner diaper
WETNESS PROTECTION ON THE SMALLEST OF SURFACES
The inner diaper is the heart of the WindelManufaktur diaper. It protects the outer diaper and clothes from getting wet. What is special about it is that it only covers the area where your child excretes. This means that a very small area of skin is exposed to wetness. In this sense, the WindelManufaktur diaper is the smallest diaper possible. What's more, thanks to the inner diaper, you have less washing to do. Very practical!
THE INNER DIAPER - IN A NUTSHELL

- wetness protection in the smallest possible space
- plenty of room for absorbent material thanks to the special shape of the tub
- individually adjustable to each leg
- available in different fabrics
- two sizes fit all outer diapers
THE INNER DIAPER IN THREE DIFFERENT SIZES
To ensure that the WindelManufaktur diaper is tight from the first day of life, there are smaller inner diapers for newborn sizes. You can recognise these by the coloured snaps.
The standard size fits all size 1 and 2 outer diapers, as well as the intermediate size 1.5 (only available as a custom diaper). So they accompany you through almost the entire diaper-changing period.
For the custom diaper size 3 (15-25 kg) we have a corresponding inner diaper which you can order directly with the custom diaper.
THREE WATERPROOF FABRICS
The inner diaper is available in three different fabrics. All materials are particularly soft and gentle on the skin.
PUL - waterproof and breathable coating
The simplest and easiest way to make the WindelManufaktur diaper waterproof is to use the PUL inner diaper. PUL stands for "polyurethane laminate" and refers to a waterproof and breathable membrane that is bonded to a fabric such as polyester. The PUL we use is CPSIA certified, contains no lead, BPA or phthalates and is also food safe.
Our inner diaper with PUL is made of 75% polyester and 25% polyurethane. The fabric is made entirely in the USA. When you hold the inner diaper in your hand, you can feel how light and soft it is. The membrane is wafer-thin, doesn't rustle and feels pleasant against the skin.
Merino wool as a natural moisture barrier
The wool inner diaper is made from the finest, mulesing-free merino wool. There is nothing more natural than a diaper with this inner diaper. This wool doesn't feel scratchy even on your baby's most tender spots. It is also self-cleaning and odour-neutralising. You can make it waterproof by greasing it with lanolin (wool grease). We show you how to do this on our page about wool. The wool we use is so cosy that even wool sceptics want to wear it!
The wool for our inner diapers is processed by the most experienced specialists in the Alps.
TENCEL™ Lyocell - the innovative and environmentally friendly solution
The inner diaper made of TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres is the perfect compromise for parents who want to do without synthetic fibres as far as possible and also do not like to use animal products. Unlike our PUL inner diapers, this PU backing is the waterproof material of natural origin. The wood used for this comes from sustainable forestry.
The manufacturing process is particularly environmentally friendly.

INNER DIAPER TIPS AND TRICKS
Here's what you should look out for when adding absorbent inserts to your inner diapers:
The elastic sides should curve inwards over the inserts. They should not bulge outwards.
The edges lie IN the folds of the legs - this way the diaper stays tight and doesn't leave any marks. A little trick for an optimal fit: gently run your index fingers along the left and right edges of the inner diaper from the bottom to the front or carefully push them towards the folds of the legs.
Place any diaper fleeces or liners inside the inner diaper in the same way as the absorbent inserts. They should not extend beyond the edges of the inner diaper.
When changing diapers
If the insert is only wet, you can remove it from the inner diaper and replace it with a dry one. You can also leave the inner diaper to air out until the next use. If the inner diaper has been soiled by stool, unbutton it from the outer diaper and replace it with a new one.
Adjust the size
To ensure that the inner diapers fit at every stage of your child's development, you can adjust them perfectly to the circumference of your child's legs. All inner diapers have an opening in the elastic tunnel that you can use to pull the elastic out a little and make it smaller. We will show you how to do this in the following videos. There are two methods for the crochet knot - the "keyhole" method and the "eyelet" method:
More inner diaper tips
Check out ourHelp Centre for more inner diaper tips.
- If the inner diaper has only become damp, you can simply hang it up to air.
- You can wipe out small spots of dirt with a damp cloth or rinse them in the sink.
- Heavily soiled diapers (except wool) can be stored together with the absorbent inserts and then washed.
PUL or TENCEL™ lyocell inner diapers can be washed in the coloured wash at 30-40 °C if they are lightly soiled. If they are very dirty, or at least once a month, you should wash them with the absorbent inserts at 60 °C on the standard or cottons program. It is best to put them in a laundry net so that the coating is not scratched by zips or the like.
- If you have greased diapers, you can simply rinse them off under the tap or brush them dry. Washed woollen diapers must then be greased again with lanolin.
- The inner diapers should not be put in the dryer. This is not even necessary, because they dry very quickly on the line.

COMBINING THE DIFFERENT SIZES
In the transition from newborn size to size 1, you can also button the smaller inner diaper into the size 1 outer diaper.
THE INNER DIAPER COMPARED TO OTHER BRANDS
Unlike other three-piece systems, you can adjust the length of the elastic cuffs on the inner diaper. This means that it adapts to every little leg and grows with you for a long time. In addition, with the different materials, you have a choice that suits you and your child.
The wetting area is particularly small compared to other systems. Nevertheless, the inner diaper holds enough absorbent material for all situations. This is especially important if your child does not tolerate wetness and tends to get sore quickly.
