WOOL - BREATHABLE, WATER-REPELLENT, SUSTAINABLE
Wool is a wonderful fibre for cloth diapers and many other of our products. Why? Quite simply, because wool has the perfect properties that we expect from our cloth diapers. Wool is...
- equalises temperatures,
- neutralises odours,
- keeps moisture out with lanolin and doesn't give dirt a chance.
- does not give dirt a chance.
What's more, it's much easier to care for than you might think. When washing and greasing, there are no more things to consider than when caring for other diaper fibres. These will quickly become second nature to you once you start. What makes wool so special and how you can best treat it, we will show you on our info pages on wool care.
Here we would like to introduce you to our entire range of wool products, which will certainly continue to grow in the future.
The WindelManufaktur diaper made of wool in our shop
THE WINDELMANUFAKTUR DIAPER MADE OF WOOL
Inner diapers made from merino wool
Our wool inner diaper is the heart of the diaper and becomes a natural high-tech fabric when greased. It is waterproof, dirt-repellent and very breathable. The merino wool used (guaranteed mulesing-free) is soft, very thin and thus ensures a pleasant climate in the diaper. With our wool inner diaper you can change diapers plastic-free and at the same time have the possibility to be flexible with the outer cover.
Outer diapers made of or with wool
If you want to go completely wool, you can choose a wool outer diaper to complement the inner diaper. This is made from the finest virgin wool or merino wool. Of course, the leg cuffs are also made of wool to complete the wool outfit.
But the beauty of our diaper system is that you don't necessarily have to use a wool outer diaper in combination with a wool inner diaper. You can also use our popular cotton or linen models, or a mix of cotton on the outside and wool on the inside. And you still benefit from the advantages of a wool diaper. Wonderful, isn't it?
You put wool liners on top of the absorbent insert to catch the solids, which has a hard time sticking to the wool fibres. The wool transfers liquid to the inserts beneath, keeping the skin feeling dry. In order for the liquid to be passed on to the inserts, the liners must not be greased!
Another possible application is to place the greased liner at the bottom of the inner diaper to make the diaper even more waterproof.
The ultimate tip: the wool night diaper
If you're looking for a nighttime tip, wool might be the ideal solution. Because it is enormously breathable and able to neutralise odours caused by long night wear. It also absorbs 30% of its own weight in liquid, making it a last resort for a soaked soak. With a well-greased wool inner diaper, you have the perfect basic equipment for a night diaper.
You can also use a wool outer diaper. Greasing is not absolutely necessary here. If you do, the WindelManufaktur diaper is especially waterproof and breathable. By the way, a little tip: If the greased outer diaper fits really well, you can even use it as a backup diaper without an inner diaper. For example, with our trainer inserts.
To keep your skin nice and dry at night, you can complete the wool diaper outfit by putting a (non-greased) staydry liner made of wool on top of the absorbent insert and/or greased underneath it to prevent from leaking even more.
Does a wool diaper pay for itself?
The advantage of our wool diapers compared to other wool outer diapers is that they are very easy to clean. If only urine has got into them, you only need to air them out. The smoothly rolled surface makes it very easy to rinse or shake off dirt - especially if the diaper is well greased. After cleaning and renewing the wool treatment, it is also much quicker to use again. So you need fewer in number overall. While other models recommend six diapers for a basic set, we recommend four.
Accessories made of wool in our shop
DIAPERING ACCESSORIES AND OTHER WOOL PRODUCTS
Our wetbags with wool are greased and serve as an ideal storage place for diapers and other textiles. This way you avoid using plastic as a coating and the air can circulate well. Wool also neutralises the smell of urine and, impregnated with wool grease, is quite resistant to bacteria.
Wool diaper changing mat Windelmanufaktur
A special version of our changing mats is the combination of linen and wool. The natural properties of wool make it a great base. Additionally greased, it is waterproof, is dirt-repellent and offers a pleasant, soft base for changing diapers on the go or as a play blanket.
The greased changing mat is also very practical for diaper-free parents. Then it is the perfect surface for playing naked or as a back-up when sleeping. Its dense surface makes it easy to catch mishaps without soiling the surface underneath.
Potty training pants made of wool
Our training pants, made from knitted, soft merino wool, are a great help when getting potty trained and can be used as smart underwear afterwards. They are soft, light on the skin and do not scratch. The fine and thin wool knit is temperature regulating and comfortable to wear in summer as well as in winter.
All of the training pants have buttons on the front and back into which you can button organic cotton terrycloth or hemp fleece absorbent pads. While cotton training pants require inserts with a built-in moisture protection membrane, so that you don't have to change the trainer and possibly even the trousers in case of a puncture, the inserts for our merino wool training pants do without a moisture protection layer - because greased with wool grease, the trainers are waterproof and breathable.
Merino shirts, leg warmers, loops and scarves made from the finest merino wool.
We have other fashionable accessories in our shop made from the wonderfully soft merino wool knit, with which you can perfectly complement your little sheep's wool outfit.
- The merino shirt is cut extra long and can be pulled over the diaper so that it is guaranteed not to ride up. So you don't need a button-up bodysuit.
- The leg warmes are perfect for elimination communication, for wearing or simply as a substitute for trousers. They can be used as arm warmers later on and therefore have an extremely long life.
- For the cold season our scarves in different sizes as well as loops are suitable.
Wool lunch bags
With our reusable lunch bags made of wool in handy sandwich size, you have a plastic-free option that takes up less space than a space-consuming bread box. There's room for small snacks like fruit, nuts, biscuits, carrots and of course sandwiches and more. After eating, the lunch bag can then simply be folded flat for storage. The high-quality processed wool allows a high air exchange, so that the food can be stored in it in a breathable and hygienic way.
Our wool nursing pads are sewn with a layer of wool on the outside and do not require a moisture barrier made of polyurethane. Due to the material properties of the wool, they are still waterproof and at the same time provide a comfortable climate. The absorbent core is made of organic cotton sherpa and the inside is made of pleasant bamboo viscose, which has a cooling effect and does not stick to the skin.
VIRGIN WOOL FROM SHEEP
For our woollen diapers and other woollen products we use high quality pure virgin wool from sheep of particularly fine quality. Some products are made from the particularly soft wool of Merino sheep, which are then labelled Merino pure virgin wool or Merino wool. The special nature of merino sheep means that mulesing is a widespread practice in the production of merino wool, particularly in Australia.
In contrast, the virgin wool from Europe that we use for our outer diapers, for example, is always mulesing-free. The fibre we use for our inner diapers is guaranteed mulesing-free.
When purchasing all the materials we use, we pay great attention to the origin and production of the raw materials. We deliberately source our raw materials from democratic countries with fair working and production conditions. All fabrics are produced in compliance with Oeko-Tex guidelines, which means that our fabrics do not contain any chemicals that are harmful to the skin.

WOOL CARE MADE EASY
Wool products usually only need to be aired out when they are not dirty. This makes them particularly easy to care for, as washing is often only necessary every two to four weeks.
You can wash them by hand or in a special wool washing programme in the washing machine. It is important to keep the temperature constant (warm to the touch).
Some products should be "greased", as you have already read. This means that they are subjected to a lanolin treatment after washing. This is not complicated at all. We explain it in detail on our wool care knowledge pages. You will also find valuable tips on washing and drying.
Colour-intensive wool products should be washed thoroughly before they are used for the first time to avoid staining other garments. Use the wool programme on your washing machine.
To grease or not to grease - that is the question.
One has to be greased, the other not. That could drive you crazy. Or do you? In principle, it's quite simple:
- Greasing makes wool water-repellent (like the sheep itself).
- Not greasing allows liquid to be absorbed and passed on, but the fibre itself still feels dry due to its special properties.
So: If you want to protect something from getting wet, you should grease the wool. If this is not absolutely necessary or even undesirable (as with the Staydry liner), then do not grease.
In the following video, we show you how to grease your woollen diapers so that they retain their wetness-protecting and dirt-repellent function.
